This Fall, Erie Niagara AHEC is collaborating with D’Youville University to bring back the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) to students at D’Youville who are interested in -- or currently working toward -- a career in healthcare. HCOP is a classroom-based series that follows D’Youville’s academic year. Students participate in five workshops per semester, that supplement program curriculum and focus on emerging and pressing topics in healthcare.
After participating in two workshops so far, D’Youville students are interested in learning more about how they can best show up for their current and future patients. Participation and enthusiasm from the students keep these workshops energized, and Erie Niagara AHEC is looking forward to our coming sessions!
This semester, students have the opportunity to learn about these topics according to the following schedule:
Date | Topic |
9/11/2024 | Cultural Humility Overview and Methods |
9/25/2024 | Cultural Humility in Healthcare When Servicing Members of the LGBTQIA+ Community |
10/16/2024 | Organizational Health Literacy and the Provider’s Role in Helping Patients Understand Their Health |
10/23/2024 | The Teach-Back Method, used for increasing patient comprehension through clear communication |
11/6/2024 | Guest Lecture: Preventing Provider Burnout and Vicarious Trauma in Patient-Provider Interactions |
Our Guest Lecturer, Dr. Archana Mishra, is an award-winning practitioner, professor, and fellow from SUNY University at Buffalo’s Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. We are delighted that she will meet students on November 6th to discuss Preventing Provider Burnout and Vicarious Trauma in Patient-Provider Interactions. Dr. Mishra is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UB and Attending Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Erie County Medical Center and the VA Hospital of WNY. Her passion is mindfulness in medicine.
We are looking forward to another year of growth and learning through the HCOP program!
