This summer, Erie Niagara AHEC partnered with Jericho Road Community Health Center to facilitate a Medical Internship Program for 10 amazing future doctors! Rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors from Buffalo’s East Side community spent six weeks learning from various medical professionals throughout the Buffalo area and shadowing at Jericho Road and Erie County Medical Center.
Students learned about a variety of local health issues, including the opioid epidemic and refugee and immigrant health concerns. In addition, these interns met with pharmacists, dentists, radiologists, nutritionists, and others to learn about the many healthcare professions they can pursue. At the end of the summer, students spent two weeks shadowing local physicians and medical students, allowing them to gain hands-on experience interacting with patients in various healthcare settings.
Thanks to an amazing partnership with Dr. Takesha Leonard and the rest of the Jericho Road team, this year’s Medical Internship Program was an outstanding success! We cannot wait to see what these 10 future doctors achieve as they help create a healthcare workforce that is reflective of and responsive to its community.
